Whats the difference between 3/8-16 and 3/8-18 plug tap?
My friend and I want to know if we can use the former on a steel pipe.
Answer:
Not if you are going to put a pipe fitting into it. Standard pipe threads are tapered 3/4 inch per foot and the TPI (Threads Per Inch) for 3/8 is 18. Standard 3/8 bolts have either 16 or 24 TPI, and while two of the taps for them are tapered, they cut straight threads. The tapers are for getting the tap started. There is a bottom tap with very little taper for tapping a blind hole, a taper tap with the most taper on the end, and a plug tap with less taper on the end. Good Luck
