ORP, or oxidation reduction potential, is a measure of the ability for a chemical to oxidize and reduce its concentration. To oxidize, the chemical reacts to oxygen. As a result, an ORP meter can make sure that the conditions are ideal for algae to thrive without the threat of an invasive species.
Hanna Instruments produces the HI 9125N ORP meter for around $350. It uses a dual level LCD display to show the ph and temperature in conjunction with the ORP reading. Protection against power failure is included within the device. The ORP meter will shut off when the battery is too low to provide accurate readings. This prevents the possibility of an inaccurate result.
Extech makes a less expensive and smaller version of the ORP meter. This model, the RE300, can automatically self calibrate, and sells for about $110. A bar graph is displayed on the ORP meter screen to make it easy to know how much to adjust the chemical balance in the water.
The meter has a flat electrode design, that can handle much rougher treatment than a typical glass bulb electrode design. You can take up to 15 different samples of data before the RE300 runs out of memory.With its many uses, it becomes obvious that any career involving the healthy combination of chemicals in water will find the ORP meter to be absolutely necessary.
