The part which actually cuts the hole into the wood is the drill bit. The drill bit is attached to the end of the drill by the chuck. The chuck is the part which rotates the drill bit. When speaking about drill bits for wood, it simply means drill bits which are designed in such a way to cut through wood. Each drill bit is made to cut a specific type of material. Although some drill bits are versatile and can cut a range of materials.
Drill bit designs
I said earlier that drill bits for wood have a different compositions than other kinds of drill bits. The noticeable difference is the tip and the thread. The threads are responsible for clearing away the chips of wood, or metal shavings which result from the bit cutting the hole. But before I get into the comparisons let me explain to you what a drill bit looks like.
A drill bit is a cylindrical piece of metal which has spiral running down the tube, the end is cut at an angle which is called the point angle and then there is another angel called the lip angle. Drill bits are either made of High Speed Steel (HSS) or Carbon Steel and can be coated to make them last longer.
Drill bits for wood
Twist bits can be used on a number of materials and are the go-to drill bit when in doubt.
Spur point drill bits are best suited to use on wooden surfaces. They have a central point on the one end of the drill bit, with two spur on each side which facilitate the straight drilling of holes.
Another type of drill bit for wood is the flat wood bit. This bit looks like a spade with a point in the centre. It is the point which steadies the bit and the spade which cuts away at the wood. They are used when needing to drill larger holes.
