The Importance of Car Repair by Andy Hagin
Do you know that you could save hundreds of dollars every year if you maintain your car or truck regularly? Some of the periodical maintenance and repair jobs that you have to have done when you take your car for a scheduled auto repair session include transmission repairs, complete check of the brakes and tuning up the engine so that it delivers the best mileage for you. If your car repair job is done in a haphazard manner, all the systems in the car will not deliver the best performance, leading to higher fuel costs or a compromise on safety.
Car repair is a complex job as the automobiles that are on the road today have a lot of electronic controllers in them. These controllers are there to assist the repair technician in case there is a problem with the car. Now the issue is that these electronic devices are extremely sensitive and let out information only when they are connected to a computer with specialized automotive software. They also immobilize the car or truck if you try to tamper with them. What this means is that you should leave the car and truck repair jobs to expert mechanics in the auto repair business.

Frequently Asked Questions...
My 1998 Subaru legacy outback 2.5 still overheats. Replaced water pump, thermostat 3 times, radiator.?
Replaced everything. Bled system thoroughly. It acts like a bad thermostat, but after 2 new thermostats (1 from dealer). It will idle for hours, but as soon as I push it hard, the needle goes up and it starts puking coolant thru overflow.
NOT the head gasket. No smoke or steam. No coolant loss until temp gauge tops out.
Compression is good.
I'm baffled. Shop wants to give up, stick me with huge bill and no warranty.
And my city won't let its citizens buy a gun.
What to do?
I do believe you nailed it, Sarge. I didn't say there was oil in coolant, but a small amount was there.
Now what?
And thay did replace radiator. Even after they had it out and I tested it with a garden hose. (OK)
WILL ANY KIND OF STOP LEAK FIX THIS? I thought maybe someone used Blue Devil and clogged the water jackets. Now I'm thinking about it.
Answer:
I've had the same problem, and it is the head gasket. There is no coolant in the oil, but there is a slight amount of oil in the coolant. Subarus, especially the 2.5 from this era are noted for it.
A small head gasket leak pushes combustion gas into the coolant, it makes the coolant hard to circulate because of dissolved gasses. A very small leak won't show smoke or steam. Have any of the shops done a combustion gas test on the coolant? It's an inexpensive test that would show if any combustion chamber is leaking.
You've replaced everything that could cause it, short of a collapsed hose or a clogged radiator, the head gasket is about all that's left.
Edit: The best way to repair it is to have the head gaskets replaced. Unfortunately, if you can't do it yourself, it is an expensive job. The other alternative is to use a stop-leak type of product that claims to seal small head gasket leaks. If it works, it will buy you a few more years of use from the car. If it doesn't work, you'll end up replacing the head gaskets anyway. I personally would stay away from stop leak, but I also can do the work on my own car for the cost of parts.
