Experiences Of Eye Surgery
Getting an injury to the eyes is usually the last thing most people would like to happen to them. Sight is an enormous part of our way of negotiating the world, and coping with a visual impairment requires a major effort to adjust. Having had two accidents involving eye trauma, I'm glad to say that having a qualified professional fussing around with the surface of a damaged eyeball isn't quite the horrible procedure that it sounds like.
My first experience of eye surgery happened when I was nine, a game with a stick and a foam ball at Scouts went badly wrong when a leader accidentally let go of the stick. I remember everyone stood in front of me ducking, and then I got hit very hard in the face. My eye felt as though it had been pushed back in, although the actual impact was a half inch below it. A surgeon was called in, I feel guilty as I obviously interrupted a dinner date judging from the smell of food and the nice clothes he was wearing. A fluorescent dye was put in to my eye to show up the cuts on the cornea, fortunately there was only minor damage there and I got away without having to have much done, apart from putting my lower eyelid back together. He did a great job and the only after effect is a faint squiggly line in my peripheral vision that won't stay still when I try and focus on it.
That would have been enough for me, except years later I got a small splinter of metal stuck in my other eye, which stung like crazy and wouldn't shift. This time, the specialist eye clinic I went was brimming with modern equipment, as they also carried out LASIK operations amongst other eye procedures. A couple of anaesthetic drops and the offending article was deftly scrubbed out, and several views taken of my eye which now featured a microscopic brown rust ring. I was given some eyedrops as follow-up and the experience was over, apart from a check up in a week, in minutes.
