What You Should See In Central Western Australia
If you would like breathtaking backpacking paths, ensure you check out Karijini National Park. It provides some of the finest backpacking paths in the northwest of Australia.
There are backpacking paths designed for all degrees of experience, from grade 6 (available to licensed hikers or getting a guide) right down to grade 3. There are some of the most breathtaking gorges with striking shades. One trail has got a 40 metre abseil straight down a waterfall. If you are fortunate, you'll get to witness one or two wedgetailed eagles, which can often grow up to a wingspan of 3 meters!
Because of its sheer gorges, Karijini National Park is an increased danger of flash floods. A few bushwalkers have already been killed when the water levels rose rapidly and swept them onto the sides of the gorges. Not long ago a SES worker was drowned attempting a rescue. Stay safe and never put your life or the health of people trying to rescue you in harms way. Without exception notify the ranger where and when you plan to go and walk in pairs or groups.
Karijini National Park offers you an eco retreat if you are looking for a step up from straight tents. These feature solar powered hot water in addition to raised platforms with the camping tents. If not, you can bring a personal tent or perhaps even just take a campervan. If you don't mind driving to and from Newman each day and would rather enjoy a little more comfort, stay at the Mia Mia resort owned by Auzcorp.
Several hours to the north of Karijini National Park is the mining centre of Port Hedland. It's the most important town in the zone and around 15,000 people are located there. On a monthly basis, nearly 20 million tonnes of iron ore pass through the main harbour, meant for China, Japan and USA. Some other major exports also include salt (make sure to drive to the salt mine just outside Port Hedland), manganese, sheep and cattle.

Forecast for Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011.
More active weather was anticipated across the West on Saturday, while the
East remained sunny and dry. A trough of low pressure over the Northern
Rockies was expected to continue moving eastward through the Northern Plains
and Upper Midwest. This was expected to continue pushing a cold front
southward, which would extend from the Great Lakes, through the Central
Rockies, and into southern California. The system was expected to produce
strong flow from the north and continue pulling cold air in from western
Canada. Widespread scattered snow showers were expected to develop along this
system, with two to four inches of snow anticipated in the Upper Midwest and
Northern Plains, up to eight inches of new snow over the Northern and Central
Rockies. Meanwhile, behind this system, another trough of low pressure was
expected to move onshore from the Pacific Northwest, allowing for rain and
high elevation snow showers to persist across Oregon and Washington. Winter
weather advisories were expected to remain in effect throughout the
Northwestern U.S. High wind advisories were issued across the Central Rockies,
due to wind gusts from ...
